Screen Printing

T-shirts

Screen printing is a skill I learned in my visual art days at VIU. It’s a class I remember fondly and a process that requires both patience and a bunch of supplies. I allow myself to be messy for these projects, and I embrace the fact that my alignment will never be spot on. I really love that look and I think it’s why I always come back to this medium. I feel the style the screen printing produces inspires me to create art that replicates it. I feel this visual aesthetic would look great next to a harbour view. 🙂

Volleyball

These t-shirts were created for a staff volleyball tournament. I printed them at home. Original artwork was created digitally then cut with my Cricut on vinyl, which was then placed on the screen. I then printed each colour one at a time.

Birthday!

For my 30th birthday I printed shirts for each person attending. I called it “World Tour” and my guests and I toured around downtown Nanaimo. It was a lot of fun and the shirts were a hit and a great keepsake. It all started with a little drawing (as with most things).

Duvet Cover

I had a vision for a duvet cover which was a much bigger scale than I understood. I couldn’t find any that I liked so I wanted to make my own. I like the blocky style with whimsical flowers so I went ahead with this! I printed in my basement this summer and I blocked out pieces strategically, uncovering them only when the time was right. I did 4 layers of different colours for this.

I had to wait in between layers and sections for the ink to dry. Moving the fabric too soon meant a big mess! I also had to move quickly enough that my screens didn’t completely dry over. For these reasons, I only did white printing on one side of the duvet cover
